Who would have known that a shared learning experience at Birmingham University’s School of Malting and Brewing in 1983, would be the catalyst for the creation of Firebird Brewing Company thirty years later! After meeting again in 2012, Bill King, who had been running the Horsham-based family brewery King and Barnes and Richard Peters, a Brewer at Courage, realised very quickly that their friendship and shared love of brewing could create something very special.
The company is named as an acknowledgement to the continual regeneration of Bill King’s brewing heritage, and has found its home at the old Brickworks in Rudgwick, Sussex, which ceased production in 2010. With the amazing help and support of the Harrison family, dairy farmers and owners of Sussex Charmer Cheese, this once derelict site has been regenerated starting with the Firebird Brewery, with its own bar overlooking the brewery.
Bill and Richard's philosophy, to help everyone find a beer they will love, has seen Firebird brew cutting edge, modern craft beers like Work Ethic New England IPA, and New Clothes Blueberry Sour, as well as more traditional styles such as the best selling Heritage Sussex Best and Two Horses Pale Ale.
We are sure that their long standing friendship is going to become a wonderful long standing brewing partnership too, and can’t wait to see what they produce next!
