Greyfriars vineyard

Meet The Producer: Greyfriars Vineyard

One of Redh’s favourite local vineyards is Greyfriars, located close to Guildford on the sunny south-facing slopes of Puttenham, Surrey. Originally planted in 1989, the current owners Mike and Hilary Wagstaff have considerably expanded the winery since taking over in 2010, and there are now almost 50 acres of vines on three sites. The chalky soil is perfect for producing wine, with the same geology as the Champagne region in France.

Since 2010, the vineyard has concentrated on producing high quality English sparkling wines, using the three classic champagne grape varieties – chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier. Greyfriars wines have been critically acclaimed, winning prizes in international competitions including the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Their white sparkling wines include 2013 sparkling classic cuvee, 2014 oaked blanc de blanc and the non-vintage classic sparkling cuvee. Also available is the non-vintage sparkling rose and the sparkling rose reserve.

If you prefer still wine, the bumper 2018 summer allowed Greyfriars to produce excellent pinot gris, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, while a 2019 rose is also available.
