Wiston Estate Wine Owners

Meet The Producer - Wiston Estate

At Redh we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality, locally produced wine, beer, and cider beverages - so much so, that we built our business on it!

Our love for good quality drinks is what has lead us to work with some of the best drinks creators in the UK. All of the suppliers we work with not only love what they do, but take pride in and worship the drink they produce just as much as we do.

Over the course of the next few months, we are going to introduce each of our amazing suppliers to you so you can see for yourself how much time and hard work goes into the beverages we serve!

First up in our supplier announcements is one of the critically-acclaimed wine producers we work with here at Redh - Wiston Estate.

The Wiston Estate story

Wiston Estate has been owned and farmed by the Goring family since 1743, with Harry and Pip Goring presiding over it today. Covering a huge 6,500 acres of rolling countryside across the South Downs in West Sussex, their son Richard, together with his wife Kirsty, now manage Wiston Estate and are involved in the day-to-day running of the vineyard and winery.

However, this lovely patch of land hasn’t always been used to grow delicious wine. The vineyards, which cover 16 acres of the land, were planted in just 2006 thanks to Pip Goring’s dreams and passion for wine.

Pip’s dream

Ever since Pip arrived in England in 1972 to marry her now-husband Harry and take over the helm of the Wiston Estate, she had wanted to plant a vineyard.

Growing up in Franschhoek, South Africa, mountains and beautiful vineyards became a familiar sight for Pip and she dreamed of seeing the same rows of vineyards in her new home in Sussex. She had also visited Côte des Blancs in Champagne, France several times and was struck by the lands similarity to the chalky slopes of the Wiston Estate.

This discovery and her love for wine led Pip to believe Wiston Estate was the perfect place for a vineyard - yet this was in the 1970s when vineyards in the UK were relatively unheard of.

In true English fashion, Harry thought it best not to rush into anything, and so for the next 34 years at every Christmas and birthday, Pip would give Harry books on vineyard management and guides to winemaking (hint hint!). Every estate meeting Pip would also bring up her vineyard dream (nudge nudge!). Finally after many years of persuasion, in 2006 Pip’s dream became a reality and they planted their 16-acre vineyard.

Shortly afterwards they were joined by winemaker Dermot Sugrue, who shared their passion and was increasingly excited about what was possible with the Wiston Estate vineyard, particularly the chalk it had been planted upon. Under Dermot’s guidance, Wiston Estate has since gone from strength to strength and this year was awarded ‘Winery of the Year’ in the Wine GB Awards 2018.

The label

Family, passion and integrity are at the heart of the Wiston Estate’s philosophy, so it was important that they acted as the inspiration for the label. The colour and intensity of Pip’s South African nature (turquoise is her favourite colour and even features inside the neck foils on the vintage wines) is combined with Harry’s family heritage (the Goring family crest on the neck label of every wine) and English design.

The intricate detail around the label also replicates the plasterwork of the Great Hall at the Wiston House and the font has been inspired by wooden archive boxes found around the estate dating from the late 19th century.

Wiston’s success

Wiston Estate wines have gone on to win countless awards for their high quality taste. Their Wiston Estate Blanc de Blancs 2010 was the most awarded English Sparkling Wine in 2016 and their Cuvée 2013 won the English Sparkling Wine Trophy in the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2017, as well as being named the UK’s Best Sparkling in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2017.

However, the most recent and profound award yet was the Wiston Estate being named ‘Winery of the Year’ in the Wine GB Awards 2018, with the newest release Blanc de Noirs 2010 awarded ‘Supreme Champion 2018’ out of 230 wines submitted - a truly fantastic achievement.

The rest of the Wiston Estate wines are following suit with awards of their own as well as a number of critical acclaims from journalists and critics around the world:

Matthew Jukes: “Every sparkling wine here is a triumph”

David Williams: “With the talented Dermot Sugrue at the winemaking helm, West Sussex’s Wiston Estate has surged to the front of the increasingly competitive English fizz pack”

We are extremely proud and excited to be working with such a passionate, successful supplier of UK wine. Now you know a little more about history and success of Wiston Estate wine, we hope you can appreciate the love and thought that has gone into each glass of beautiful wine we serve today.
